Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  This resolution authorizes application to the Minnesota Historical Society Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants Program for up to $166,000 to implement portions of the Lakewalk Interpretive Plan. There is no match required for the grant program.

The Minnesota Historical Society grant funding will support the creation and installation of 22 freestanding interpretive signs and four bronze model ships as described in the Lakewalk Interpretive Plan, which was adopted through resolution 23-0494R. The Plan defines specific elements and common themes for interpretation along the existing trail and the segments soon to be reconstructed during the Lakewalk resiliency and Harbor Plaza improvements. Themes invite visitors to gain a richer understanding of the area and create meaningful spaces for visitors to engage. Interpretive elements that are identified in the Plan include historical, cultural, and artistic representations of people and place. The project area for the Plan includes the riverfront segments of the Baywalk along Bayfront Festival Park, the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center, and the south side of Canal Park, and then continues along the Lakewalk from the ship canal to Brighton Beach.
