RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE ADMINISTRATION REDUCE THE 2022 FEE FOR THE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE TO $187.10.

BY PRESIDENT FORSMAN AND VICE PRESIDENT KENNEDY:
WHEREAS, the city of Duluth has a long history of supporting the Memorial Day Parade through in-kind contributions to honor those who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country; and
WHEREAS, the first Memorial Day Parade in Duluth was held as far back as 1871 according to local veterans; and
WHEREAS, the Memorial Day Parade is a long-standing free event for participants and attendees that coincides with the celebration of a federally recognized holiday; and
WHEREAS, the city of Duluth administration had proposed a standard fee increase for all parades and similar events that originally applied to the Memorial Day parade; and
WHEREAS, significant concerns were raised regarding the proposed increase that brought the future of the Memorial Day Parade in Duluth into question; and
WHEREAS, council leaders and the city administration met with local veterans on March 11, 2022, and tentatively agreed to a path forward to keep the parade in Duluth long-term; and
WHEREAS, the council believes the Memorial Day Parade serves a public purpose in recognizing and educating our community regarding the sacrifices our veterans, both living and deceased, have given in service to our city, state, and nation.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the city council requests the city administration reduce the 2022 fee for the Memorial Day Parade to $187.10, in addition to the application fee, in recognition of the long history and tradition the parade has had in our community since 1871.
