RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE DULUTH INDIGENOUS COMMISSION TO ACT AS A CULTURAL LIAISON FOR PARKS AND RECREATION WAYFINDING AND INTERPRETIVE SIGNAGE.

CITY PROPOSAL:
WHEREAS, The Duluth Indigenous commission was created by the Duluth city council pursuant to Ordinance 9529, amending Chapter 2 of the Duluth City Code, 1959 as amended; and
WHEREAS, on July 18, 2016 at a regular meeting, the Indigenous commission passed a motion to submit this resolution to the Duluth city council; and
WHEREAS, the duty of the Indigenous commission, as defined in the Commission’s bylaws, is to serve in an advisory capacity to the city council and administration; and
WHEREAS, the objectives of the Indigenous commission are to guide in the development of policy, planning and services so as to ensure the Indigenous community is incorporated in the decision making, future planning and stewardship of the city of Duluth; and
WHEREAS, the Duluth parks and recreation commission passed a resolution unanimously at their October 12, 2016 meeting, to approve of the submittal of the Indigenous commission’s resolution to be a resource for parks and recreation to ensure that all Indigenous language, symbols and art are appropriate,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Duluth Indigenous commission will serve as a cultural liaison for Duluth parks and recreation wayfinding and interpretive signage projects to ensure that, when Indigenous language, symbols and art are used in new signs, they are accurate and culturally appropriate.
Statement of Purpose
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The Indigenous commission will be a resource for parks and recreation to help ensure that, when Indigenous language, symbols or art are used on signs, they are accurate and appropriate. In addition to consulting the Indigenous commission, the city will continue its existing practice of consulting independent Indigenous organizations and governments.
