Title

RESOLUTION APPROVING PROPOSED SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE NEW CIVIL SERVICE CLASSIFICATION OF INSTRUMENT SPECIALIST, AND SPECIFYING CONTRACT BENEFITS FOR SAME.

Body

CITY PROPOSAL:

RESOLVED, that the proposed specifications for the new civil service classification of instrument specialist (attached as Exhibit A), which were approved by the civil service board on May 2, 2017, are approved; that said classification shall be subject to the city's collective bargaining agreement with its basic unit employees; and that pay range for said classification shall be Range 34, $4,990 to $5,868 per month.  The proper city officials are authorized to execute and implement an agreement with the union to provide for employing one or more unit members consistent with this resolution.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  The new classification of instrument specialist has been created to more accurately reflect the expanded responsibilities of personnel now working in the instrument technician classification.  Relative to the instrument technician classification, the instrument specialist classification includes less reliance on outside contractors, greater technical expertise, reduced supervisory guidance, and more independent discretion. Current personnel in the instrument technician classification will be promoted to the new instrument specialist classification. The current staffing plan calls for a single instrument specialist and no instrument technician.  The pay range negotiated for the classification is Range 34, $4,990 to $5,868 per month.
