Title

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF LOCATING A SECOND AMAZON HEADQUARTERS IN THE TWIN CITIES METROPOLITAN AREA.

Body

BY COUNCILOR HOBBS:

WHEREAS, Amazon.com (“Amazon”) has announced a competitive site selection process in North America for a second corporate headquarters. Amazon is encouraging states, provinces and metro areas to coordinate with relevant jurisdictions to submit a response to their request for proposals; and

WHEREAS, Amazon estimates that building a second corporate headquarters will involve over $5 billion dollars in capital expenditures in the community and create as many as 50,000 new full-time jobs over the next ten to fifteen years; and

WHEREAS, the entire state of Minnesota would benefit from the direct and indirect economic investment involved in locating Amazon’s second corporate headquarters in the Minneapolis/ St. Paul twin cities metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the city of Duluth would benefit from the increase in tourism and greater employment opportunities that would result from having Amazon locate a second corporate headquarters in Minnesota.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Duluth city council supports the efforts by the state of Minnesota and the communities in the twin cities metropolitan area to work together to respond to Amazon’s request for proposals and inform Amazon what an ideal location the Minneapolis/St. Paul twin cities metropolitan area would be for a second corporate headquarters.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The purpose of this resolution is to express the city council’s strong support of the state of Minnesota and the twin cities metropolitan area communities’ efforts to respond to Amazon’s request for proposals for a location of a second corporate headquarters in North America.
