RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF INDIVIDUALLY-PAINTED UNIQUE TILES FROM THE ARROWHEAD ALLIANCE OF ARTISTS WITH DISABILITIES

Body

CITY PROPOSAL: RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Duluth hereby accepts the donation of 360 individually-painted unique tiles from the Arrowhead Alliance of Artists with Disabilities for the purpose of public art pursuant to the letter of donation attached as Exhibit A.

FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby thanks the Arrowhead Alliance of Artists with Disabilities for its generous gift.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the City of Duluth to accept from the Arrowhead Alliance of Artists with Disabilities (AAAWD) the donation of 360 individually-painted tiles into the City’s public art portfolio. In the summer of 2011, 336 people from Duluth, Cloquet and Two Harbors whose lives have intersected with disability created 360 individually unique tiles with the support of 19 local partners, 71 volunteers, and 18 community sponsors, including the project champion, Arrowhead Alliance of Artists with Disabilities (AAAWD), an unincorporated association. This collaborative effort is known as the Disability Mural Project Duluth.

In the fall of 2015, partners from the City of Duluth, the Duluth Transit Authority and the Duluth Public Arts Commission secured permission to install the tiles as a pre-designed mural within the Skywalk adjacent to the new DTA Multimodal Transportation Center in downtown Duluth. Due to staff turnover at various agencies, the project has been inactive since 2015. This resolution will enable the City of Duluth to formally accept these tiles so that, in conjunction with the Duluth Public Arts Commission, the City may cause the tiles to be installed in the originally designated location. The installation and maintenance of the mural will be funded through the City of Duluth’s existing Public Art fund.
