Title

RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CITY OF DULUTH’S LOCAL AUTHORITY TO PROTECT THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE OF OUR COMMUNITY.

Body

BY COUNCILOR WESTERLUND, PRESIDENT SIPRESS AND COUNCILOR ANDERSON:

WHEREAS, a number of bills are advancing in the Minnesota legislature that would undermine the city of Duluth’s established local decision making authority; and

WHEREAS, Duluth is a city of the first class with local conditions and circumstances that are unique to our community; and

WHEREAS, the Duluth city council is charged with protecting the health, safety, and welfare of this community and local decision making is essential to that work; and

WHEREAS, the ability to make decisions on a local level allows Duluth’s elected officials to craft creative and innovative solutions to the unique problems facing the city and to safeguard the wellbeing of the community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Duluth city council asks the Minnesota legislature and the governor to reject legislation that erodes the principle of local control and maintain local officials’ authority and flexibility to meet the challenges of governing and providing local services to our community.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  The purpose of this resolution is to support the ability of Duluth’s elected officials to protect the health, safety, welfare and economic security of the citizens they represent through local legislation and to oppose state legislation which would undermine the ability of local officials to address Duluth’s unique circumstances and challenges.
