RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PROPER CITY OFFICIALS TO ACCEPT A FIFTY-PERCENT REIMBURSEMENT SAFETY GRANT FROM THE STATE OF MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND INDUSTRY OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION UNIT FOR THE STREET MAINTENANCE DIVISION.

Body

CITY PROPOSAL:

RESOLVED, that the proper city officials are hereby authorized to accept a fifty-percent reimbursement safety grant from the state of Minnesota department of labor and industry occupational safety and health consultation unit, funds to be deposited in Fund No. 110-500-1920-4220-02.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  This resolution authorizes the proper city officials to accept a reimbursement grant (contract attached as Exhibit A) from the Minnesota department of labor and industry occupational safety and health consultation unit for the city of Duluth street maintenance division's east tool house.  The city will spend $18,000 on the router retrofit kits (to reduce silica dust exposure to employees), and MNOSHA will reimburse the city at a fifty-percent rate ($9,000). The router retrofit kits will be used when road crews have to cut concrete.  This generally creates a lot of dangerous silica dust, which can give employees breathing issues, and can cause permanent lung damage if employees are exposed chronically.  The retrofit kits vacuum up dust to prevent it from entering employees' lungs.
