Statement of Purpose
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution authorizes the acceptance of a Lake Superior Coastal Program grant from the State of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in the amount of $4,500 to purchase and install four automated rip current warming system units.
This grant was funded in part by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, administered by the Office for Coastal Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under Award NA21NOS4190083 provided to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program.
In 2009, the Duluth Fire Department installed a manual rip current warning system on Park Point to inform residents and the 6.7 million annual visitors to the dangers of rip currents. Park Point features a 7-mile-long beach on Lake Superior and is one of the city’s largest natural attractions. Replacing the manual warning system to an automated rip current warning system will alert the community more quickly to dangerous water conditions.
