RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE USE OF THE DULUTH CITY COUNCIL NAME ON A THANK YOU PLAQUE TO BE PRESENTED TO CONGRESSMAN RICK NOLAN IN APPRECIATION FOR OPPOSING INCREASES IN TRUCK SIZE AND WEIGHT LIMITS ON MINNESOTA’S ROADS.

BY COUNCILOR SIPRESS:
WHEREAS, he Duluth City Council is concerned with the welfare of motorists, and the cost, quality and reliability of our infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, the trucking industry is an important part of the nation’s economy and safely sized and weighted trucks are necessary to truck drivers to conduct their work in a safe and responsible manner; and
WHEREAS, according to the Minnesota department of transportation (“MnDOT”), nearly 35 percent of Minnesota’s bridges are over 50 years old; and
WHEREAS, as of 2015, Minnesota has 1,760 bridges that are rated as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete according to MnDOT; and
WHEREAS, the Duluth city council opposes increases in truck size and weight limits because of compromised road safety and the resulting damage to already stressed local roads and bridges; and
WHEREAS, the Duluth city council wishes to thank Congressman Rick Nolan for his vote opposing increases in truck size and weight limits on Minnesota’s roads.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Duluth city council recognizes Congressman Nolan’s support and authorizes the use of the Duluth city council name on a thank you plaque to be presented to Congressman Nolan by the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks.
Statement of Purpose
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution recognizes Congressman Rick Nolan’s support for limiting truck size and weight on Minnesota’s roads and authorizes the use of the Duluth city council name on a thank you plaque to be presented to Congressman Nolan by the Coalition Against Bigger Trucks.
