RESOLUTION HONORING THE VICTIMS OF THE SHOOTING IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA.

                     BY COUNCILOR WESTERLUND:

                     WHEREAS, on June 12, 2016, forty-nine people were murdered and fifty more people injured by a gunman in Orlando, Florida;

                     WHEREAS, many of those injured and killed were members of the Hispanic and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (“LGBTQ”) communities;

                     WHEREAS, there is evidence that this egregious crime was motivated by hate and intolerance; and

                     WHEREAS, hate crimes touch not only the individual victims, but tear at the fabric of the entire community at large.

                     THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the citizens of Duluth honor the victims of the Orlando, Florida shooting and offer their deepest condolences to the family members of the victims and to the citizens of the city of Orlando.

                     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the citizens of Duluth stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities across the country against intolerance, bigotry and hate and pledge to uphold and protect the rights of all people to live without fear of intimidation and violence.

 

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  The purpose of this resolution is to honor the victims of the June 12, 2016, shooting in Orlando, Florida and to express the city of Duluth’s condolences to the family members of the victims and the city of Orlando, Florida, and to affirm the city of Duluth’s solidarity with the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities.
