RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE CITY’S ADMINISTRATION PLACE ADDITIONAL RECYCLING CONTAINERS ON CITY PROPERTY TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE IN LOCAL LANDFILLS AND THE CITY’S WATERSHED.

BY COUNCILOR FILIPOVICH:

                     WHEREAS, a recent Rochester Institute of Technology study found that nearly 10,000 metric tons of plastic enter the Great Lakes every year; and

                     WHEREAS, a 2013 waste composition study found that over 16 percent of solid waste in the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District was plastic waste; and

                     WHEREAS, the city of Duluth can help reduce the amount of plastic in local landfills and watershed by facilitating recycling on city property.

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVE, that the council requests that the city’s administration place more emphasis on recycling and place more recycling receptacles on city property, including city parks and city sidewalks.

 

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The purpose of this resolution is to request that the city administration increase the city’s recycling efforts and place more recycling containers in city parks and on city sidewalks in order to reduce the amount of plastic and other recyclables in the local landfills and watershed.
