Title

RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY IN THE CITY OF DULUTH.

Body

CITY PROPOSAL:

                     RESOLVED, that:

                     (a)                     Birds are an essential part of a healthy ecosystem as pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect and rodent predators; and

                     (b)                     These bird species play an important economic role in our community by generating tourism and recreational dollars; and

                     (c)                     Duluth is famed for its location within important migration flyways and is home to Hawk Ridge Observatory; and

                     (d)                     International Migratory Bird Day is officially recognized each year on the second Saturday in May; and

                     (e)                     May 12, 2018, is hereby proclaimed as International Migratory Bird Day in The City of Duluth.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  Since 1993 International Migratory Bird Day has become a primary vehicle for focusing public attention on the nearly 350 species that travel between nesting habitats in our communities and throughout North America and their wintering grounds in South and Central American, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the southern U.S.

This resolution is a required action step to Duluth’s designation as a Bird City by the Audubon Minnesota. The Duluth Audubon Society is working towards this designation by completing the steps shown in Attachment 1.
