RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE REHABILITATION PROJECTS AS THE CITY OF DULUTH’S TOP PRIORITY FOR THE 2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION.

CITY PROPOSAL:

                     RESOLVED, that the city of Duluth’s top priority for the 2020 legislative session is to secure state funding to reconstruct damaged coastal infrastructure located in the Lakewalk, Canal Park, Brighton Beach, and DECC/Harbor Drive shoreline areas. Repairing and improving coastal infrastructure will allow the city of Duluth to:

 

                     Better protect city property and infrastructure by making the coastline more functional and resilient;

                     Ensure continued public access to Lake Superior;

                     Provide safe passage for pedestrians and vehicle traffic along Harbor Drive and Brighton Beach;

                     Incorporate climate adaptation to shield against future storm impacts;

                     Increase coastline durability utilizing best practices for climate resiliency; and

                     Continue to support the Great Lakes shipping and boating economy.

 

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The city’s top priority for the 2020 legislative session is to secure $13.5 million dollars of state funding to contribute to an ongoing $62 million project to reconstruct damaged coastal infrastructure along the Lakewalk, Canal Park, Brighton Beach, Minnesota Slip, and DECC/Harbor Drive shoreline areas to be more functional, safe, durable, and resilient in a changing climate. The project includes reconstruction of seawalls, shoreline armoring, and repair of the adjoining public spaces and infrastructure.
