Statement of Purpose
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: This resolution authorizes a contract with Dixon Studios, LLC for the Lake Superior Zoo brown bear exhibit artificial rockwork for an amount not to exceed $382,874.

This contract is one of several in an integrated array of projects to refurbish and repurpose a long vacant polar bear exhibit into new exhibits for brown bears and otters. Dixon Studios, LLC will be responsible for installing all shotcrete artificial rockwork in the refurbished exhibit as called out in project drawings & specifications.

The brown bear and otter exhibits are part of the larger $3.8 million Bear Country project which also includes refurbished black bear and cougar exhibits. Bear Country is funded through a combination of $1.9 million in state bonding dollars and a $1.9 million local match from the half-and-half tourism tax. The entire project is on pace to come in on budget. In the event of budget overages, Lake Superior Zoological Society is responsible to pay 100% of any and all costs in excess of $3.8 million.

The new black bear and cougar exhibits are expected to open by the end of March of 2020. The target opening for the brown bear and otter exhibits is the end of summer 2020.
