RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING CITY OFFICIALS TO DONATE THE 42 FOOT REPLICA VIKING SHIP TO SAVE OUR SHIP, INC.

CITY PROPOSAL:
WHEREAS, in 1926 a 42 foot replica Viking ship, captained by Gerhard Folgerø, sailed from Bergen, Norway, across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Great Lakes, and arrived in Duluth, Minnesota on June 23, 1927; and
WHEREAS, the replica Viking ship was donated to the city of Duluth by Bert Enger and Emil Olson and was put on public display in Leif Erikson park consistent with the donors’ wishes and the 1927 city council resolution attached hereto as Exhibit A; and
WHEREAS, the replica Viking ship eventually fell into disrepair and the city removed the ship from the park and placed it in an indoor storage facility; and
WHEREAS, Save Our Ship, Inc. is a Minnesota non-profit organization whose objective is to restore the replica Viking ship and to build a permanent display structure for the ship that will protect the ship from the weather and allow for public viewing; and
WHEREAS, In a letter dated May 14, 2021, and attached hereto as Exhibit B, Save Our Ship, Inc. states that it would like to have ownership of the replica Viking ship to have full access and control of the ship to complete the restoration and display project; and
WHEREAS, the city of Duluth has full ownership of the replica Viking Ship; and
WHEREAS, the city of Duluth wishes to donate the replica Viking ship to Save Our Ship, Inc., so the ship can be fully restored and displayed for public viewing.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the proper city officials are hereby authorized to donate the 42 foot replica Viking ship to Save Our Ship, Inc.
Statement of Purpose
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: The purpose of this resolution is to authorize city officials to donate the 42 foot replica Viking ship to Save Our Ship, Inc. to facilitate the ships restoration and eventual public display.
