RESOLUTION AMENDING CONTRACT 22878 WITH STACK BROS MECHANICAL CONTRACTING, INC., FOR ADDITIONAL WORK TO MODIFY THE GAS BURNER CONTROL SYSTEM FOR TWO BOILERS AT DULUTH ENERGY SYSTEMS, FOR AN ADDITIONAL AMOUNT OF $40,090, AND AN AMENDED TOTAL OF $172,690.

Body

CITY PROPOSAL:

RESOLVED, that the proper city officials are hereby authorized to amend Contract 22878 with Stack Bros Mechanical Contracting, Inc., for additional work related to the modification of the gas burner control system for two boilers at Duluth Energy Systems (DES), for an additional amount of $40,090, and an amended total of $172,690.

Statement of Purpose

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:  this resolution amends Contract 22878 with Stack Bros Mechanical Contracting, Inc., for additional work to modify the gas burner control system for two boilers at Duluth energy systems, with an additional cost of $40,090, and an amended contract total of $172,690.

During the construction of the natural gas burner project, it was determined that the specified coal pipe’s lead time would not meet the construction deadline. The new coal pipe is different than the specified pipe, meaning that it is ceramic lined. Due to the ceramic lining, the new pipe would not line up with the existing splitter box without additional reducers installed in the system. In lieu of installing additional reducers in the coal pipe it was decided that the age and condition of the existing splitter box that it should be replaced to better fit with new coal pipe. In addition to the splitter box, it was also decided due to the condition of the original parts that the inspection doors and boiler connection rings would be replaced.

Contract 22878 was originally presented to City Council and passed on May 23, 2016; Resolution No. 16-0368R.
